DineForGood: The Ugly Cake Shop

Ugly or not, the cakes here taste delicious and most importantly, they have a beautiful heart.

The Ugly Cake Shop is one of the F&B social enterprise joining this year's Festival for Good. It started of as the owner's passion for baking at home, which gradually evolved from an online business into a physical cafe in Geylang Bahru. The cakes here are "ugly" because they are absent of any artificial colouring, artificial flavours, fondant, marzipan or gum paste. (Yay! That's a big bonus for me because I can never, never understand the "beauty" of these sugary clothes for the cakes)

Part of the profits go towards funding nutrition fund of a school in Timor Leste. And this also makes the cupcakes here so uniquely different from other cupcakes on this small island. Trisha, Melissa, Big Daddy, Vickiee....each cupcake here is named after the family and close friends of Lisa--I thought that's a good and fun way to remember the flavors.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of buttercream and that's explains I usually stay away from cupcakes. But the ones here so light and tasty that I polished 5 or more in a sitting. Be it the vanilla or chocolate cupcake base, the cake is moist, crumbly and not too greasy.

I loved the aromatic coconut whiffs and tinge of saltiness in Carmen as much as I adored the deep chocolatey goodness in Sally, a dark Varlhona Chocolate cupcake crowned with fudgy peanut butter frosting. Not to forget the unpredictable Vickiee whose molten salted egg yolk lava core flowed without warning upon the slightest forkful into the center.

Big Daddy (From $50 for a 7-inch whole cake)

If you are lucky (especially on Saturdays), you may even get to catch Desmond, a grilled warm cupcake served cherry compote, fresh cream and cake crisps. The blistered effect on the delicate skin created a toasty cake aroma and pleasant undertones to what might be a simple cake.

The shop takes in customized orders for special occasions, weddings and offer delivery as well. So if you like any cupcakes here or find that the regular portions are too small to satisfy, you can upsize your flavor into whole cakes and pig out to your heart's desire.
